BFD's Holiday Wreath Reminds the Community to Stay Fire Safe

Each year during the holiday season, the City of Beloit Fire Department displays a wreath with green light bulbs. This wreath isn’t just a festive decoration — it’s a powerful reminder of the importance of fire safety in our community.

Every green bulb represents families who remain safe from fire this season. If our department responds to a fire in Beloit, one bulb will turn red. And if a fire results in a tragic loss of life, a bulb will change to blue. Our hope is simple: to keep every bulb green all season long.

Why Fire Safety Matters

The holidays bring warmth, joy, and gatherings with the people we care about most. They can also bring increased fire risks — from candles and cooking to decorations and heating equipment.

This year alone:

  • Wisconsin has experienced 48 home fire deaths as of November 22, 2025.
  • More than 1,835 people nationwide have lost their lives in home fires.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), smoke alarms make a tremendous difference in survival:

  • Smoke alarms were present in about 74% of reported home fires.
  • Nearly 60% of home fire deaths occurred where smoke alarms were missing or not working.

Right here in Beloit, we recently responded to a fire in a duplex while the occupants were sleeping. Working smoke detectors alerted them early, allowing everyone to escape safely. That is the kind of outcome we strive for every single time.

How You Can Help Keep the Wreath Green

You can play a crucial role in protecting your home and loved ones:

  • Test all smoke alarms regularly
  • Replace batteries if you’re unsure they’re working
  • Install alarms on every level of your home
  • Make sure alarms are placed inside each bedroom and sleeping area

A few minutes of prevention can save lives.
