Got a Service Line Notification Letter in Beloit, WI? Here's What It Means

You may have received (or will soon receive) a letter about the water service line to your home. These letters are going to homes where the water pipes are made of lead, galvanized steel, or materials we don’t yet know. The letters and/or notices will arrive as early as today; most will arrive next week.

The federal EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) requires us to tell homeowners what their private water service line is made of. The City of Beloit owns the part of the water line from the street to the shut-off valve near the sidewalk (called a curb stop). The homeowner owns the part from the curb stop to the house.

If your home has lead or galvanized pipes, the federal government is requiring those to be replaced within the next 10 years. The City is also working to replace any lead pipes in our system.

Most letters are being sent to homes where we don’t have records of the pipe materials for the portion that is on the private property. Knowing what your pipe is made of helps us improve safety and keep a complete inventory. If we don’t know your pipe material, we are required to send this notice every year until it’s confirmed.

If you know what kind of pipe you have, or want help figuring it out, please call Beloit Water Resources at (608) 364-5735.

If you didn’t get a letter, that means we know your pipes are safe and you don’t need to do anything.
